Connect your Athena account to Sematic Health

This guide shows end users how to connect their athenahealth login and attach one or more departments to their Sematic Health account.

Embedded app requirement

For the Athena embedded app to work in Sematic Health, your user must have **at least one active athenahealth department connection**.

If you have zero connections, the embedded app experience is blocked until you connect.

Before you start

  • You can sign in to Sematic Health.

  • Your organization has athenahealth configured by an admin.

  • At least one athenahealth department is available for your organization.

  • You have athenahealth credentials for the department(s) you need.

Connect your first athenahealth department

  1. In Sematic Health, open **Connections** from the left sidebar.

  2. Click **Add connection**.

  3. On the connection screen, choose your department.

  4. Click **Connect to Selected Department**.

  5. You will be redirected to athenahealth. Sign in and approve access.

  6. After redirecting back to Sematic Health, confirm the connection appears on the **Connections** page.

Connect additional departments

  1. Go back to **Connections**.

  2. Click **Add connection** again.

  3. Repeat the same flow for each department you need.

Each department is stored as its own connection, so it is normal to see multiple rows for your account.

Switch your active department (if prompted)

  • If you have multiple site/department connections, Sematic Health may ask you to select a site before continuing.

  • You can also switch department from the **Department** selector in the sidebar.

Disconnect a department

  1. Open **Connections**.

  2. Find the department row you want to remove.

  3. Click **Disconnect**.

Troubleshooting

  • **“Athena integration not configured for this organization”**: ask your Sematic Health admin to finish organization Athena setup.

  • **“No departments configured. Please contact your administrator.”**: your org setup exists, but no departments are available yet.

  • **Connection fails after Athena sign-in**: retry once from **Connections**. If it still fails, send support the exact error shown.

  • **Embedded app won’t load or asks you to connect first**: confirm you have at least one active row on the **Connections** page.
